Siena and its Palio
Known for its rich artistic, historical and cultural heritage. Its historic center has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The links with the past and the traditions are strong and celebrated in the historic Palio di Siena, essence of the spirit of belonging to the city. It is not an event for tourists, nor a historical re-enactment, it represents the life of the city, its history, its people over time. The first embryo of the event dates back to the battle of Montaperti of 1260, from that moment, the custom is renewed in the Palio of Siena, which takes place on July 2 and August 16. Still today it refers to the regulation of 1656.
In Monteriggioni, reachable from Siena in 10 minutes by car, you can truly breathe a medieval air. In fact, Monteriggioni is one of the most beautiful fortified villages in Italy, and every year is visited by 90,000 people. It was built by the Sienese in the early 1200s as an extreme bulwark on the border against the enemy Florence, and was able to guarantee for centuries the independence of the Republic of Siena. Even today, the castle looks impressive and majestic as a crown, because of the walls dotted with 14 towers, also remembered by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
Arezzo means discovering a territory able to offer a vast naturalistic and artistic heritage. The frescoes by Piero della Francesca in the Duomo are worth the visit of the city alone, but how not to be surprised in the heart of the medieval village, with the elegance of the great seasons of art and architecture of Arezzo. Next to the imposing Loggiato Vasariano (model of the one later built for the Uffizi), the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici, a synthesis of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, then the apse of the Parish Church of Santa Maria. In the Basilica of San Domenico there is a painted cross of Cimabue. Ancient traditions vibrate, to live them you can visit the penultimate Saturday in June or the first Sunday in September: Piazza Grande becomes the scenery of the Giostra del Saracino and every first weekend of the month the Antique Fair.
